Also willing to endanger his employees.

Maybe he should just wait until things reopen, California seems to be moving pretty quickly there anyway.

Regardless, I don’t think arresting business owners/management  does much good here. Go ahead and fine them, even cut off power if needed to force them to close, but arresting people when you just want them to go home is overkill.

This is drawing a strange line in the sand, will be interesting to see where all of Musk’s disciples and fanbois in Silicon Valley and Hollywood shakeout in all of this - will it permanently burn his bridges and turn Tesla into as much a pariah as Uber? Or will they shrug it off as Elon just  being Elon?

One worker dialed into KTVU and told the station he arrived for work at 6 p.m. PT on Sunday with his shift ending 6 a.m. Monday morning.

The worker said Tesla is “up and running” and expressed concerns the plant is not following health guidelines.

This is grotesque. The county was willing to let the plant open on the 18th - Prince  Elon couldn’t wait 7 fucking days?

He is frantic... I’m sure they ran the numbers for the quarter and it’s ugly.

The number One Rule of Ponzi Club? Never talk about Ponzi Club.
The number Two Rule of Ponzi Club? Gotta keep new money rolling in to keep the facade alive.

I’m morbidly curious what a -80% quarter does to this “story”.

It’s a great question... this could be perceived as wildly off-brand.

My guess is that it just polarizes the base. The guys that think he walks on water and heals the sick? Will probably just pretend that it didn’t happen— like Pedoguy didn’t happen and insulting the transit expert didn’t happen.

The “Save The Earth” guys?  probably less sympathetic, given their relationship to the Bay Area “doing everything perfectly”...

You can't shut off power to Tesla they will just use all the battery packs.

I am dumb to this story, but is this a line worker, or manager/facilities/security/get preparations in place?

This just smells funny, and I am not a Elon/Telsa boy.

Their “art” of revenue recognition and “surprise beat-the-numbers” profit has hinged on a specific pattern of shipments and rhythms to sales...  And the virus has completely thrown that pattern out the window.  If sales were “soft” going into this quarter?  They needed to execute the pattern perfectly to keep the con going... and the pattern ain’t going to cooperate at all this quarter.

yep. I’m sure a big part of why they kept trying to stay open as long as they did before shutting down was to make last quarters numbers look as good as possible.

Make no mistake, every car company is probably going to be dropping bad news at this quarter’s end.

They were making a profit the last 3 quarters apparently, though I assume Tesla doesn’t have much of a cash reserve to speak of. But surely there’s enough gas left in the ol’ grift hype machine to get enough VC money to bridge the gap for one damn week.

As much as I like the cars, Elon is such a contemptible fool I don’t think I could ever buy a Tesla as long as he’s still connected to the company.

The Mercury News ran a pic today of the parking lot COMPLETELY FULL.

In theory they are allowed skeleton “finance” and “maintenance” staff, but if the lot’s full, they aren’t all oiling the robots and backing up the servers.

This Musky “screw it, we’re open” is probably a mea culpa that they quietly called every body over the weekend and said “You better be at work for early shift Monday or you’re fired”...

Because it looks like they were at full staff at 8AM this morning.

Yeah, the weird thing is all the profit comes from the sales of Green Energy credits.... the cars themselves always lose money.

the problem with booking Green Credits is that you only get to recognize them as you deliver cars. So, they could really get clobbered on the net profit line if they can’t book the credits.

If it was me, I’d build everything to inventory, book only nominal revenues and take all the bad news in one horrific bad Q2 “COVID” quarter, then knock the cover off the ball in Q3 on the rebound.

Ah, I didn’t consider that. Yes, I suppose you would need to sell the green cars to be able to sell the green credits.

All this money talk is starting to go above my head, but if it were up to me I would at least follow local public health regulations so I didn’t look like a robber baron deliberately putting my workers in danger. But my parents didn’t own any emerald mines so I don’t get to run a car company  ¯\_()_/¯

Heh. Yeah. That whole self-made man persona sorta falls apart.

But, face it, all these huge fortunes (Gates, Buffett, Allen, Musk, Cuban, Dell ) all came from families that started with enough wealth to let the kids go screw around with “the next coming thing”. The rest of us? All had to go get jobs and get busy.

Stuff like that makes me appreciate stories like Larry Ellison, who literally came from humble roots and scrambled hard in his early days.

It’s like I feel so bad for Michael Jackson, who was falsely labeled a pedophile, when in fact he loved children. Really loved children.

They have a LOT of the green credits hidden away in the cookie jar, but I don’t think even Tesla has the balls to announce a top line decline in revenue of 70% but “surprise” on the bottom line by padding with “credits”....

But, I await the Q2 results with great interest.

Its what drove a deep wedge between one of my best friends from college. He grew up 3 houses from the g overnor, college fully paid for and jumped from one start up to another. He would whine how he wasn’t making much but he knew he was never going to homeless. easy to make a profit at the casino when it isn’t your money you’re using.

I try to appreciate that the “freedom” never needing to worry about money gives these guys to try some crazy ideas.

On the other hand, IBM was always going to buy an operating system from somebody... If it wasn’t Gates selling an OS he didn’t even own?  It was Gary Kildall (RIP) or a dozen other tiny companies  with CPM or other homegrown OS bases.  Gates could just hang it out over the edge (his dad was a senior partner at a big law firm) with more confidence that he had the financial and legal backstop to keep him out of jail or Chap 11.  Being rich doesn’t suck if you want to be a big time entrepreneur...
